OFFICIAL RULES OF SKITTLES
AIM OF THE GAME
Players knock down skittles by rolling three balls along the alley, points are scored for knocking skittles down.
The winner is the team with the highest score.
PLAYING THE GAME
Play either as a team or as two players playing head to head.
All balls must be rolled underarm along the alley.
Penalty bowl is given if the ball is bounced or leaves the alley or is not bowled directly on the deck of the alley, players will automatically forfeit one of the three balls in play.
Skittles are to be replaced on their markers prior to the penalty given.
No score is added for a Penalty bowl.
The feet must remain behind the bowling line.
Balls are rolled one at a time, each player bowls three times – known as a ‘Hand’. Each player in each team completes a Hand.
Play alternates between teams until all players have completed a Hand.
A ‘Leg’ is completed when all players have bowled one Hand.
Agree before you start playing, how many Legs the game will take.
Normally a game will consist of 6 Legs.
Points are awarded for each skittle knocked down, one point per skittle. If all skittles are knocked down on the first bowl, this is known as a ‘Strike’. If all skittles are knocked down on the second bowl, this is known as a ‘Spare’.
All fallen skittles are removed after each throw.
After a ‘strike’ or a ‘Spare’ all skittles are replaced on their markers.
The maximum score per Hand is therefore 27 – i.e. three Strikes.
WINNER
The winner is the player or team with the highest score.
TOP TIP
Malpas Skittles is NOT a bowling alley; the speed of the ball is much slower and is ROLLED rather than thrown or bounced (penalties apply). The skill is in the direction the ball travels, the balls are heavy enough to knock the skittles over at low speed.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Because of the nature of St Andrews Hall, it is important to comply with the above rules. All players are requested to wear NON-SLIP footwear, the oak flooring and the alley can be slippy at times.
